Assessments

Clear, structured assessments that build understanding and guide support

What is an OT assessment?

An occupational therapy assessment is a structured process that helps us understand how a child or young person participates in everyday activities. We look at:

Functional skills: how they manage daily tasks like dressing, eating, handwriting and self-care
Sensory processing: how they respond to sensory information and how this affects their comfort and participation
Participation: how they engage in activities at home, school and in the community

The assessment pathway

  1. 1

    Enquiry & triage

We'll have an initial conversation to understand your concerns and determine if an assessment is appropriate. We'll discuss current waiting times and what to expect.

  2. 2

    Information gathering

We may ask you to complete questionnaires and, with your permission, gather information from your child's school or other professionals involved.

  3. 3

    Assessment sessions

Assessment sessions may take place in a clinic, at home or at school, depending on what's most appropriate. We use play-based activities, observations and standardised assessments where helpful.

  4. 4

    Feedback conversation

We'll have a conversation with you (and your child if appropriate) to share our findings and discuss recommendations in plain language.

  5. 5

    Written report & recommendations

You'll receive a written report with clear recommendations that you can share with schools, other professionals or use to inform support at home.

What to expect

Practical timelines, clear scope, and plain-language feedback are built into every assessment pathway.

Session structure

Assessment sessions are typically 60-90 minutes. We work at the child or young person's pace and use activities that feel natural and engaging. Parents and carers are usually present, and we will discuss what works best for your child.

Timeframes

We will discuss current waiting times with you at enquiry. Once assessment sessions begin, the process typically takes 4-6 weeks from first session to receiving your written report.

Scope of assessment

Our assessments focus on functional skills, sensory processing and participation in everyday activities. We do not provide formal autism diagnosis, but our assessments can inform understanding of functional needs and support requirements.

What’s in your report

Our written reports are clear and practical, designed to be shared with schools, other professionals, or used to plan support at home. A Sensphere assessment report typically includes:

  • Background information
  • Assessment findings
  • Strengths and abilities
  • Areas of need
  • Recommendations for home
  • Recommendations for school
  • Next steps

Common questions about assessments

A typical assessment session is 60 to 90 minutes. The full pathway from first session to receiving your written report is usually 4 to 6 weeks.
We don't provide formal autism diagnosis. Our assessments are autism-informed and focus on functional skills, sensory processing and participation. They can inform understanding of needs and support requirements alongside any formal diagnostic process led by a paediatrician or multidisciplinary team.
Assessment sessions may take place in a clinic, at home or at school, depending on what's most appropriate for the child or young person. We use play-based activities, observations and standardised assessments where helpful.
The report covers background information, assessment findings, the child's strengths and abilities, areas of need, and practical recommendations for home and school. Reports are written in plain English so parents, teachers and SENCOs can use them straight away.

Strengths and interests: what they enjoy and what they're good at

Our assessments are autism-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, meaning we respect and value different ways of thinking and being while identifying practical support needs.
